New Studies Examines Why Teens Aren't Getting Vaccinated.
The tools are out there to keep teens healthy from certain illnesses - so why aren't they getting used?

Researchers looked at parent questionnaires in a national survey on teens taken from 2008 to 2010 to better understand why moms and dads aren't taking their older children in for recommended inoculations.

When parents of teens were asked why they did not vaccinate their children for certain forms of tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis, and meningitis, some parents noted these shots were not recommended and not necessary.

When it came to the controversial HPV vaccine that protects against the sexually transmitted human papilloma virus-- which has been linked to cancer-- some parents also said it was not necessary and in some cases noted their children were not sexually active, or not the appropriate age.

Concerns about the safety of the hpv vaccine grew each year, from 4.5 percent in 2008 to 16.4 percent in 2010.

The number of parents intent on not vaccinating for HPV also increased from 39.8 percent in 2008 to 43.9 percent in 2010. The main concern was safety.

Investigators concluded more doctors need to discuss with teens and their parents about the benefits of these particular vaccines.
